A New Method For Handling An Old Problem --
Accessing Data and System Functions on the WEB

Tom Herring, Computer Systems Development (CSD)

Legacy data encompasses all of the corporate data repositories whether it lives in mainframe databases, client/server systems, or anywhere in between. Functionality is the ability for a wider range of customers to interact with systems in simpler and less restrictive ways. Traditionally this has been done by setting up enterprise-wide "hard-wired" networks connecting separate LAN's and older mainframe networks which has resulted in multiple problems in getting different network architectures to talk to each other. The greater the customer base that needs access to services, the greater the logistical problem to build "The Network".

Now, by utilizing the Internet or a corporate Intranet much of this structure and its problems can be minimized. New tools can do everything from simple enhancement of dumb terminal interfaces to full-blown client/server applications where SQL requests can be sent to any database in the warehouse environment.

Tom Herring is the Vice President for Sales and Marketing for Computer Systems Development (CSD), Inc. Herring’s 25-year professional career is comprised of extensive work as a large-project leader and implementation manager, logistics engineer, trainer and analyst. In his five years with CSD, he has been instrumental to the company’s success in web-enablement, facilities management and outsourcing. During his career, Herring has earned a reputation for excellence in business operations, customer support and his ability to effectively communicate complex principles to technical and non-technical professionals in a clear and concise manner.

In his present capacity, he is responsible for leading a team of IT professionals who are creating a new Sales and Marketing division at CSD. This includes division strategic and tactical planning for efforts in both Custom Application Development vertical markets (Healthcare and Higher Education) as well as efforts in a new push into Consulting Services market in New Mexico and North Carolina. The latter calls for aggressive re-engagement with the marketplace to establish CSD as a premier provider of IT technical services in those geographies. Future plans include expansion into the states in thew western region.

As Director of the Internet Technologies division, he was responsible for all facets of business and consulting operations for CSD’s Internet Technologies division. He guided the company’s pioneering work in Web-enabled technologies, which includes the integration of legacy applications into Internet and Intranet environments. He has directed construction of the division’s robust Web-enablement tool kit, including incorporation of Java and Hyper Text Markup Language capabilities, and also oversees the division’s Web Design Studio team which produces highly customized Web pages.

Before joining CSD, Herring served as a project manager for Summit Electric, Inc.’s Integrated Logistics Services project for Intel in Albuquerque, N.M. While there, he oversaw key projects, including deployment of Quality Function Deployment customer focus groups, analysis of customer computer software systems, and integration of multi-customer requirements for system architecture.

Prior to that, Herring served as a senior logistics engineer for Martin Marietta Postal Systems, Inc. There he managed the company’s delivery bar code sorter installation control room, the focal point for customer support and nationwide product installations at more than 160 U.S. Postal Service locations. He also was responsible for all aspects of corporate training video production, as well as development of courseware, administered maintenance and operation technical training for the company’s mail bar code reader.

Herring also served six years with the United States Air Force Operational Test and Evaluation Center at Kirtland Air Force Base in New Mexico. As project/program manager for the Center, he managed a 120-person multi-disciplined team in three states that tested systems for three intercontinental ballistic missiles. He was responsible for integrating the logistics, physical security, nuclear survivability, communications, software, training and human factors system evaluations. He also served as a program analyst for the Center and as such was responsible for managing the $5 million "Nuclear Hardness and Survivability Technical Support" contract.

Member of the Screen Actors Guild. Mr. Herring has appeared in numerous local and regional commercials, a national DayQuil commercial, an Unsolved Mysteries episode and is a featured performer in Gambit (Victory Productions) starring David Carradine. Mr. Herring is also the former President of the Adobe Theater, a 38 yearold non-profit community Theater in Albuquerque.

Herring holds a bachelor of science degree in business administration with an emphasis in production management from the University of Arizona and a master of business degree in management from Golden Gate University.
