Experiences with the WinWin Groupware System

Alexander Egyed, University of Southern California

The talk will present the WinWin system which is supporting the definition of software-based applications as negotiated stakeholder win conditions. (The Editor understands this to be a system that assists in the remote specification and negotiation of contracts for software systems.) Our experience in using WinWin in defining over 30 library systems, including several groupware systems, shows that it is important to supplement negotiation support systems (such as WinWin) with such capabilities as prototyping, tradeoff analysis tools, email, and videoconferencing.

We also found that WinWin's concern for the win conditions of other parties has enabled stakeholders to achieve high levels of shared vision and mutual trust. Our subsequent experience in implementing the specified library systems in a rapidly changing Web-based milieu indicated that achieving these social conditions among system stakeholders was more important than obtaining precise requirements specifications, due to the need for team adaptability to changing requirements. Further, we found that the WinWin approach provides an effective set for methods of integrating ethical considerations into practical system definition processes via Rawls' stakeholder negotiation-based Theory of Justice.

The talk is approximately the paper presented at the recent IFIPS Conference in Vienna by Prof. Barry Boehm and the speaker .

Alexander Egyed is a PhD student at the Center for Software Engineering at the University of Southern California. His research interests are in software architecture and requirements elicitation. He received a Dipl.-Ing. in Informatics from the Johannes Kepler University in Linz, Austria and a MS in Computer Science from USC.

More -- Special Opportunities and Meetings of Affiliated Organizations

Opportunity #1   ---   Data-Link Production Manager: The successful candidate will have strong motivation in developing skills related to newsletter production. Other requirements are E-mail (to receive material from the Editor), a decent printer, a publishing program (such as Pagemaker or Publisher or equivalent), and convenient access to either our print shop in Westwood or a competitive establishment.

Opportunity #2   ---   Data-Link Editor: This highly motivated individual needs to have E-mail, but can do the job anywhere. (The present Editor likes his job, but would take over as Production Manager if we find a new editor first.)

Both jobs are labor-intensive during the week following the Chapter meeting. More details and extensive assistance may be obtained from the current office holders. See the Key People Directory. Inquiries by e-mail are welcome.
